SCBA P.O. BOX 11333 ALBUQUERQUE, NM 87110
February 22, 2010

Hello Everybody,

Well it’s getting to be that time of year again. Hopefully the snow will melt and the mud will dry soon at the range, and we can all start shooting again. I hope everyone had a good off season. We have already had a few board meetings, and I am excited to get this season started. I plan on taking a shoot schedule for this year to the next board meeting, and hopefully we’ll have it posted soon after.

Some of you might have already seen the letter I sent to Bernalillo County, or maybe have heard a little bit about what’s going on. To make a long story short, I was contacted by the county a few weeks after our Thanksgiving Shoot last year. They wanted to do a market analysis on our property. In hindsight, I should have realized what was coming next. A few weeks ago, I received a new proposed lease agreement from the county even after we had already signed a new lease for the next four years. The biggest change they wanted to make was to the price. Since the very beginning the lease price on the range has been one dollar per year, but now the county is proposing a new price of $6,712 per year! The board has had several meetings trying to decide how to fight this, and last week I submitted our comments in a long letter to the county about the proposed lease back to the county. We have contacted the BLM, with whom we had the original lease agreement back in the 50’s, we have contacted the office of the State Land Commissioner, and we have all done quite a bit of research on our own. The letter contained a lot of good arguments, and we are confident that everything will work out with few, if any changes to the lease. The last I heard from the county is that they are taking our comments into consideration, and will draft a response "shortly."

In the mean time, I am pressing on like we always have. There will be some work parties planned once the range dries out enough to get in there, and soon the season will be upon us. Stay tuned to the website for a shoot schedule and work party dates.

Feel free to contact me if you have any questions about our situation with county or anything else.

See you at the range,

Cory Gilbert, President SCBA
